Narrowed down

I have narrowed down possibilities but still desperately need help. I have checked my codes, I have gotten one, 42, fuel pump relay or auto shut down relay (ASD) control circuit indicates an open or shorted cicuit condition. I hear the fuel pump come on when i turn the ignition, the car starts but slowly reaches idle speed, will remain at 1000 rpms, when I give it gas at an average pressure it climbs rpms but when i release it drops to about 500 rpms then slowly corrects itself. When I gently press the gas it drops below 500 rpms and stalls a big problem in traffic.

Have you checked either of the relays?

Re: Narrowed down

low fuel level also triggers my issue as discovered today.

Re: Narrowed down

have you checked your idle air control valve?? that is what determines the amount of air going into the intake. cold weather and the selenaid not operating properly can cause the idle to be irratic and also cause engine stalling. I would have that checked because i think that is one of the sensors omitted from the computer error scan. if you have a hanes manual then it should tell you how to test it. One last idea, Check you vaccum lines.

Re: Narrowed down

I know this is getting to be an olt thread but if you are still having problems you might try the throttle position sensor.Just a thought though. My old 95 dakota wouldnt stay running when it was cold until the truck warmed up and even it was sluggish and idled very low.Good luck with it

Re: Narrowed down

Yes, this is gettin old, but I still havent fixed the problem. And now, (progressive issues will lead me to the cause i hope) The car wont start sometimes, I wont hear the whirr of the fuel pump and when I turn the ignition I hear the sound you get when you try to start again (once the car is running) the screech grind type of noise.

Re: Narrowed down

I don't remember if you had changed your fuel pump or not. You may be able to hear it whirr or prime, but that doesn't mean it's putting out enough pressure to start the car. Check your fuel pressure at the rail.

Re: Narrowed down

I haven't changed it yet, but im wondering if not hearing it prime is a sign its crappin out or if its the relay. also my starting noise, could that be caused by not enough fuel ??

Re: Narrowed down

I think your noise is a different problem. The starter gear maybe worn.

Re: Narrowed down

My positive terminal clamp melted and completely split in half, the PCM became disconnected from the batt while driving, needless to say the car stopped and wouldnt start, I replaced the clamp and all is good, no more bad noise and it starts right up, still an erratic idle so ill work on the idle air control sensor or throttle position sensor.
