Oil Canning sound
2001 Siverado, 40000 miles has an oil canning sound or tin sounding pop.
It sounds like it is comming from the exhaust. I can hear it when stoped at a light and also several minutes after the engine is off. Any one experience this? |

I found out mine was comming from the gas tank!! I got so aggrevated by it, I ended up parking the truck and laying under it with my hand on the tank. Sure enough, a few minutes later. bonk bink I talked to my buddy who's a service manager at a local dealer. He just shrugged his shoulders and said "yeah, some of them do that". Told me to get a life and not worry about it. Still pisses me off though!!

Re: Oil Canning sound
It's your muffler. You can remove it like I did mine
Know more pinging.

Re: Oil Canning sound
I have also heard that many times before and when I asked what it was, I was told by a few people that it is simply the tank expanding and whatnot due to it cooling down and heating up. I didn't really like that answer because it sure did sound like there was a little more to that noise but it helped me not worry about it all that much.
