87 with 305 need help

Kid bought an 87 camaro that needs some love. It ran fine then it started leaking fuel out of fuel pump. Put a new pump on. After a couple of days it started to leak so have to get a new one. ? on the pump is the one that was on it had 3 lines the new one has 2 they told him to plug the one line as it wasn't needed. He didn't get it plugged well and when the tank became pressurized( heat of day) fuel came running out of it even when it was raised above the engine. Any thoughts on this? Also now it doesn't run or even start. I don't know if this is related to the pump or not. It is getting fuel cause I pump the carb and fuel squirts out. Have good spark. Cranks over but only fires on what seems like 1 cylinder. Is it possible that the timeing chain has jumped a tooth or 2? Have the distributer cap off and it appears the when set at TDC the rotor has past the no 1 post on its way to no 8. Thought I would ask before we tear into it.

Is the the pump pushing fuel up to the carb? Might want to also check the filter especially if it's constantly leaking like that.. Could just be vapor locked

do you see it leaking or just smell it or what? you could have too much pressure for a carb. i had too much pressure for my carb and that was the end of it till i had it rebuilt. it wouldnt run enless i was givin it like half throttle

Re: 87 with 305 need help

The fuel pump leaks where the 2 halves are crimped together. Pulled a plug and it wasn't wet like it was flooded. I pump the throttle and see fuel squirt out of the jets.

Hmm, I'd try hooking a timing light up to it, not only to chekc the timing, but if the indicator line is constantly jumping around (don't forget to disconnect the tan wire for the ECM), it would be safe to say that the timing chain is cashed.

Re: 87 with 305 need help

I would take the fuel pump back and get the right one. Most cars with 305's have three lines, and most with 350's have only two, but this isnt carved in stone. Most places ask if your pump has 2 or 3 lines..Capping them and getting fuel leaks later on can cause the car to catch fire and burn to the ground. The line your talking about is the fuel return line.

Sounds like the spark plugs are fowled. pull them, clean them, and try it again. If it starts right back up it could have just flooded, or other fuel delivery problems arent out of the question.

If you want to see how much slop is in the timing chain, work the balancer pully back and fourth a little, and watch the distributor rotate while your doing this. after you have moved the crank in one direction, start moving it back the other direction (slow)and watch the distributor (cap off) for movement. You will probably notice for a few degrees of rotation, the distributor doesnt turn at all. That would be slop in the timing chain. If you move the crank for more than about 1/8 inch without seeing the distributor turn you could have timing problems, enough for it to jump timing. If the distributor follows the cranks rotation while its being shifted back and fourth and it doesnt have a "dead spot" where the dist. doesnt turn with the crank, then the timing set is good enough to start the motor on.

Re: 87 with 305 need help

I agree that you need the proper pump on there. Without the return line on there you could possibly be flooding the engine, especially if the tank is getting pressurized due to thermal expansion.

Not real sure what is what on this but here is a link to an auto parts store and a pic of a replacement pump.

Looks like at the bottom there is three places for hoses to go.

Good luck
