93 Camry wagon severe idle problems

I have a 93 Toyota camry 3VZ-FE V6) with 91K which has been sitting for years. It used to overheat and we had to change the radiator, thermostat, radiator cap etc. The overheating problem has since gone. The fan turns on and the temp never goes up. However, from start up, it shakes and vibrates hard and when it warms up it idles very low (500 rpms) with violent shaking/ vibration.

Personally I’m a Honda tech and am inexperienced with Toyota engines (especially V6’s). I think there might be air in the coolant causing sensors to go wrong leading to erratic idling. How can I bleed the coolant? Where is the bleed screw? (pics greatly appreciated) What do you think could be the problem for this engine with only 91k? Thanks for the help.

Are the injectors clean? How many tanks of fuel have you used since reviving the car? Are there any stored codes? Are there any vacuum leaks? Are the spark plug wires good?

Re: 93 Camry wagon severe idle problems

Fuel consumption is ok. No CEL comes on. No vacuum leaks. Plugs and wires were replaced with OEM. I've heard that the throttle body gets oily on these cars and needs to be cleaned. Also the IAC valve needs to be cleaned and can give a lumpy idle. Thoughts?

If your temperature never goes up I do not think you have air bubles.

But just in case... I would do it like I usualy do it on my Subaru:
Park on the hill nose up and run engine with the radiator cap off.

I hope this helps,
Sam

Re: 93 Camry wagon severe idle problems

Had similar problem but less severe with our '93 V6 wagon. Cleaning the IAC valve and the inside of the dist cap was the cure.
FWIW
YMMV

Can you tell me how to clean the IAC valve? I tried pulling up some forums on TB cleaning but i cant find the IAC valve when i look down the TB. On V6's, is the IAC valve somewhere else?? Any help is appreciated.

PS: here is the thread i used: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t157470.html

IAC valve is on the side of the TB. Download the factory manual at the top of this forum. After removing the two bolts and a hose, pull the IAC away from the TB and hose it out good with carb cleaner.

Either buy a manual or go to your local library for a manual.

Re: 93 Camry wagon severe idle problems

Ok so I unbolted the IACV and im gonna give it a clean tomorrow. It looks like a disk with a little knob in the middle. Do i just clean the face of it or do i need to go deep down inside? Also the little knob doesnt seem like it moves at all is it supposed to? I heard i should lub it with wd-40, is this true?

I just hosed the guts of it out well with carb cleaner. Seemed to do it.

Re: 93 Camry wagon severe idle problems

I would not spray or lube it with anything that is not O2 sensor safe. These chemicals and their vapors will be drawn in to the engine and be burned. Stick with cleaning it with throttle body cleaner or O2 safe carb cleaner.

Re: 93 Camry wagon severe idle problems

I sprayed both the IAC and the TB with O2 safe carb cleaner, i also did the same to the PCV valve. The car starts up and idles like a champ now, MUCH better than before.
The only problem i'm having is with the passenger side dog bone mount. The mount is cracked and is causing lots of vibrations. Has anyone ever replaced this mount? Where should i get the part, dealer? autozone? I dont want to spend a pretty penny cause im planing on selling this car. Can i just use some polyurethane windo-weld? Thanks

Re: 93 Camry wagon severe idle problems

Replaced it on my Crapillac, not the wife's Camry. About $15 here...
www.rockauto.com IIRC.

As an aside, has anyone come across carb cleaner that was NOT O2 sensor safe? I've looked at at least a half dozen brands and have yet to find one that was not, at least according to the label.

I saw some at a local Murray's recently that said "not to be used on car with oxygen sensors" or something to that effect. It was a clearance sale.

Re: 93 Camry wagon severe idle problems

Thanks for all the info. I've heard that if your dogbone mount is gone that is an indication that your front motor mount is also gone and if you replace the dogbone mount it will probably get cracked within a month or so. Any thoughts?

Is most of the heavy vibration i'm feeling from this mount? By replacing this will i get rid of most of the vibrations or do i also need to replace the front motor mount? Keep in mind i want to sell the car and eliminating the vibrating for a short period of time will suffice.
