My escort wont start. Got a solution?

I own a 1994 Ford Escort 2 door car. I have one main problem and that is it will NOT start. I am in a mechanics class and have elimated a few options that could have been a solution to the problem one of which is the spark plugs which of course work fine! The car starts then sputters and dies right after I let go of the ignition. When you push on the gas while turning the key it does rev good but then back fires and dies as soon as you let go of the key..... same problem! So, if anyone knows a solution or have a suggestion on what to do, or what to check to help us find out our little problem please reply ASAP I NEED MY CAR BACK!!!!!!!!

Your timing may be off.
Also make sure the spark plugs are connected in the correct order.

I had a problem with my scort not starting when cold. Turned out that the engine coolant sensor was send the brain box the wrong message. Disconnect it ands stick a 56K ohm resistor into the harness and give it a try.

You should also do a compression check if you have the tools... it is quick and easy and will tell you a lot.

In addition to what Mightymoose said, check all the vacuum lines. Make sure you don't have a couple of broken teeth on the timing belt.

I would venture a guess that the ignition switch may be bad. Do you have access to some wiring diagrams? You may be able to "hotwire" the car in the "ON" position and then temporarily attach a switch to cycle the starter. If that works, you know it's your ignition switch.

sounds like you have loose or bad wires in the ignition. That would explain the back fire after a hard rev and letting go of the key..

Check to see that the harmonic balancer (aluminum timing ring) hasn't separated from the crank pulley. If it has the belt will be off center.
