Unhappy lifter replacement 454 1999 Suburban?

My Suburban 2500 1999 had a lifter collapse on #1 exahust valve. Rest are just fine. #1 exhaust push rod is not oiling the rocker arm and spring rest are doing great. Flushed engine, new synthetic oil and filter, stopped noise 50%, but the experts say pull the intake and check the cam they feel it should be OK since it started very rencently, but do the job right and replace all the roller lifters. I have 80K on the 2500 Question: anyone no a good article on removing the intake on my 1999 454 vortec engine I can follow step by step, any help is appreciated. As they say "I am so not looking forward to doing this job". The intake forum we have currently is just for SBs. Thanks again for any input. Bob

Re: lifter replacement 454 1999 Suburban?

I've done the intake manifold gaskets on my 99 454 twice now. It wasn't any more fun the second time. The only thing I can suggest is to keep track of your hardware as you take it off. One other thing that made it a little easier for me was to pull the front wheels off and lower the car on to the ball joints. I put a couple of pieces of scrap 2x6s under the ball joints for "cushion".
It makes it a little easier to get to the back of hte engine compartment. Oh yeah, Make sure you mark your distributor in relation to the intake before you pull it out. I use a small file because pencil or marker lines always seem to wear off. I didnt remove the a/c compressor, so I had to fight with the line that runs over the manifold the whole time, but I like to suffer.
Good luck. Don't let the machine beat you!

Grumpy, thanks for the well stated advice. You certainly paid the price having to do it twice but I have seen dealer ships do worse and you pay for all that labor. So I will also jump in with both feet but I will tell my Burb "we're only doiing this once you shape up or ship out". Nothing like getting in the spirit before a tuff job.
