keyless entry programming

i have a 2001 suzuki vitara and i don't have the keyless entry remotes. i asked the dealer if i could just get another one and he said the parts department said you cannot just program another remote, you have to install an entire new system. does anyone know how to program a 2001 suzuki vitara keyless entry remote or is the dealer right about this one?

I don't have keyless at all but I don't know why you couldn't program another remote. I have seen a bunch on ebay but I don't remember if they were for a grand vitara or not. Sorry Later, Mike

Does your Vitara already have the keyless module, located under the driver's side dash? If you're just missing the remotes and not the remotes and the module, you should be able to purchase your remotes for your model year and 'program' them to your existing keyless module.

Find the module and the 'white' or 'red' button next to the LED on the module. Turn on the ignition switch -- push the button on the module -- push a button on each remote (one remote at a time) -- let the module 'learn' mode time out (within 3-5 seconds) -- try your remote(s).

i contacted keylessride.com because they sell a remote for a 2001 suzuki vitara and they replied that the dealer was right and you cannot program a new remote. she didn't explain why they sell the remotes though.

The reason is the people they bought the systems for the keyless entry gave us ones that were not reprogrammable. No reasons to why they would do that. Now there is a bulletin on it to replace with a new part number that has a reprogrammable module.

That's the coolest thing, I just picked up a used 2000 Grand Vitara and it has only one remote. I'm going to see if I can find the module under the dash as specified above and get another remote.

It took me some time and a lot of Google but I eventually found the following procedure to get the remote starter and keyless entry to work:

TO SET

1 - set in neutral (Standard Transmission) - Set to park (Auto)
2 - set parking brake
3 - press center button, this will cause the light to flash 4 times and the doors to unlock
4 - remove key and exit car
5 - press top button, car will turn off and doors will lock


TO START

1 - press center button, doors will remain locked, lights will flash once and the car will start. At this point the car can be started and stopped at will with the center button.
2 - press bottom button, lights will flash and doors unlock
3 - get into car, insert key and turn TWO NOTCHES

I noticed on my module while trying to reprogram that my the button next to the LED is blue not red or white. What does that mean?

The keyless entry systems in the 2001 and 2002s were not reprogrammable. The replacements for them are though. I will sell you the module, with 2 remotes for $190 if you like. List is $249.42. I keep these in stock. In 1999 and 2000 they were a port isnstalled accessory, and are reprogrammable. The problem was fixed in 2003 and the module in 2003 years and up are reprogrammable as well.

Does this mean that if the battery dies you have to buy a new remote? I have a 2001 and the batteries died in both remotes.. i replaced the batteries but they no longer work.
