97 Suburban 2WD Universal Joints

I would like advice on changing the u-joints on my Suburban. It is made of aluminum and composit material. I have replced u-joints before but not on this type of shaft. What is the best method for a do-it -yourselfer for this type of shaft? I have pounded on it, but not as hard as I would a full metal shaft. It only moved enough to keep the join from moving and stopped. I sprayed it with WD-40 and tried again with no results. Any suggestions?

The aluminum MMC (metal matrix composite) driveshafts are really no different than the older design steel types, except that they are lighter and can be dented/bent/damaged more easily. Universal joint removal is intended to be done in the same manner as with a steel drive shaft. Instead of a hammer, try using a press.

Another thing to note with the MMC drive shafts is that they frequently use a different universal. While the bearing caps engaging the transmission and differential yokes are fractional (inch) sizes, the bearing caps connecting to the shaft itself are often metric sizes. Make sure the replacements are the correct sizes.

Also the alum composite shafts can be easily bent or distorted at the u joint end..hammering will bend it.
A press and proper support will remove the joint without damage..also make sure you mark the shaft and slip yoke so they go back the same way they came apart..if not, you could set yourself up for a vibration
