Troubleshooting tips?

My 85 300zx n/a will not fire up. When I turn the key, the engine rotates, but it won't turn on and stay running. I think the timing is off, but I'm not quite sure. Any suggestions on what else could cause it?

Re: Troubleshooting tips?

check the timing, check for fuel and spark... see if you can hear your fuel pump humming for 5 seconds after you turn the key to the 'on' position... what happened when it stopped running? did it just die? has it been sitting for a while? when was the last time you did a tune up on it?

Re: Troubleshooting tips?

Well, I bought this Z from a friend who bought it from an auction in a city about two hours away from where I live. He didn't have time to work on it, so I bought it from him. He said he drove it home from the auction, but it needed new head gaskets, because he thought the gaskets were blown. So he started to rip stuff apart without a manual. The gaskets looked fine, but I believe there are cracks in the exhaust manifolds, so that's probably why he thought exhaust gas was leaking. Everything is now pretty much put together, except for some jimmy rigged breather hoses for the valve covers, but I am ordering the correct hoses from a nissan dealer. It sat for a year I'd say. When we were working on it, we replaced the oil, oil filter, spark plugs and wires, belts, and I think it's about it. I tried turning it over, and the engine rotates, but won't keep turning. My dad said he could hear fuel running from the lines. Does gasoline get old after a year and has no combustion left? Let me know if I left anything out.

Re: Troubleshooting tips?

the shelf life of gasoline is pretty short. (something like 6 weeks before it starts to turn.) Follow DeleriousZ's advice to start, also pull out a spark plug and smell it. If the gas is bad, it will smell like varnish instead of gasoline. I'd also do a compression check while you have the plugs out.

Re: Troubleshooting tips?

Hey, and if it sat for a year, check for rust on the undercoating. Mine sat for a few in a yard and now theres a hole under the driver seat.
