Help to ID this paint

Hi Guys

can you tell me is this a factory colour that Mclaren supplied there cars in or if maybe it was a custom paint asked for by the owner?

I think the cars are diffrent which to me says that it must be a factory colour. I know the owner of the 4th one down had his hummer painted the same colour..Dan someone his videos are on You Tube

So yeah i need the name and if at all possible the paint code?

The one with the HDF kit is #073, Kandy Orange Metallic

The one you mention with the Hummer in the same colour is #038, Kandy Orange

Hi thanks for that you will have to excuse me i know nothing about these cars. WHats an HDF kit? and what are the numbers for?

Sounds to me like the guy that brought the car has asked Mclaren to outsource the colour and its not a standard claren colour?

HDF - High Downforce Kit - its the addition of an Aero Package by the factory

The numbers are the chassis numbers

He got Mclaren to paint it that colour - we only know of, as far as i know, 1 Mclaren having its colour change not done by Mclaren, chassis #042 owned by Carl Beal

Re: Help to ID this paint

The weren't really any factory colors for the F1. Initially I think they had 8 suggested colors which included a rather wild lime green (probably Gordon Murray's suggestion ), but from the start McLaren was willing paint the F1 any color a customer so desired. Later in the process, the standard color pallette increased significantly as seen by all the samples on the wall in this photo:

The first car to be painted the color you are so interested in was the last F1 road car - chassis #075. You can see it in this shot. The color on this car was given the name "Yquem" in reference to the French dessert wine - Chateau de Yquem - that it seems to match.

Later on, both chassis #038 and #073 were repainted in similar (but not exact) colors on refits by the factory making a total of 3 similar orange F1s. There aren't many good photos of #075, so if you see shots of one without the wing they are probably #038 and with the wing would be #073.

Interesting thread!

Does anyone by any chance know the paint code of Papaya Orange (as used on the F1 LM road cars)??

Cheers, Ruben

When you say "paint code" it implies that the paint used is a standard color from one of the major paint manufacturers such as Glasurit or PPG or similar. The McLaren orange may, in fact, be a standard color but without matching it up to a set of color samples from each of the major automotive paint companies we'll never know. It may be mixed to a formula that only McLaren and the paint company know. It is supposed to be the same orange that Bruce McLaren used on the Can-Am and Formula One cars but there's no way of knowing precisely what paint that was unless someone at McLaren back in the day remembers who supplied the paint and it may well have changed over the years - the Can-Am cars appeared in several different shades of orange.
If your question relates to building / painting a model of the McLaren then a company called MCW supplies "McLaren Orange" in aerosol and 2oz. bottles but be aware that these are lacquer paints and will ruin a plastic model unless applied over the correct lacquer primer.
