Driver's side power window motor blown!

Hi guys,

I pretty sure that my driver's side window motor is blown. I tried to buzz my window down , it made a loud grinding sound, then stopped. It won't go up or down. I check the fuses and they are fine.

My question is: Is there any way that I can get my window back up without the window motor working (Get it back up manually)? What's the best way to do this?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Driver's side power window motor blown!

If the motor is frozen you will have to take the door panel off and pull the window off the motor gear so you can raise it. The motors are sometimes hard to get to because of the sheet metal on the door. There should be three bolds holding the motor on. Loosen them and pull the window gear away from the motor gear. Make sure someone is holding the window cause it will drop. Then raise it up and then put the motor back in. Lining up the gears shouldn't be to hard.

If the window motor is shot, you should be able to force it up. I had this happen and all I did was have a friend push the button and I grabbed the window on both sides and pulled it up. Be careful, this can pull the window out of the rail, they are usually just glued in.

I would suggest getting a new motor but they usually don't die like this, usually the plastic gear in the motor strips or breaks, you will hear motor working but the window won't go up. The gears are easy to replace, just go to a auto parts store and see if they have a window motor repair kit. It should come with a gear and some lube. You will still have to remove the motor. But, if it is not working at all then get a motor at a salvage yard, this will save you $$.

Sorry for the long winded response, hope this helps you out.

Re: Driver's side power window motor blown!

I had the same thing happen to my widow motor on the passenger side, then about a month later the driver's side motor also gave up. I would advise you to just replace both of the motors. They cost about $25-$30 for each motor in the salvage yards or $30.79 for each motor at www.rockauto.com, In order to take the motor out just take off the door panel. You have to take 3 screws out, one at the bottow next to the light, another one in the door handle, and the other at the top front corner which holds a plastic piece. Then push the door panel against the door as you push it up and it will slide right off.
Now that you have the door panel off look for three screws in the center of the door and take those off using a rachet, size 8 or 10, then disconnect the power cable from the window motor and replace the motor, make sure that when you replace the motor, that the gear is in place.

When I removed them on an older t-b's I had to use a 5/8 inch hole saw so I could get the socket on the nuts. They have a guide hole for the hole saw.

Re: Driver's side power window motor blown!

The plastic gears broke in both of my 93 and 94 cars. I took either (3/4 or 1/2" cant remember?) nuts, and cut them in half, and placed them in place of the broken plastic gears. Works fine ever since.
