Hard Shift in Transmission.
This first happened to me when I got my 99' passport. The transmission would shift somewhat hard (enough to notice when it does and doesn't do it), in the gear that is between 10-20. Then around 30-40 it would shift very hard into gear, and the car would feel like its lunging forward, kinda like its trying to pull somthing that isn't there.
I took it to a tranny shop, and they said the tranny was leaking pressure and causeing the computer to go into a "safe" mode.. So I replaced the tranmission and it was intermitant between there and now 15k miles. And now low and behold its back again. Doing the EXACT same thing. Couple notes, on the orignal tranmission it was soo bad that shutting off the car didn't fix it. But basically what im doing now is when I shut the car off when this happens, it usally gets the tranny shifting fine again. But then happens again withen a month perhaps, mabye weeks. When it down shifts into the low gear when deaccerlating it sounds like a coffee grinder or somthing lol. Again once I shut off the car it fixes itself and doesn't do it. I have a 99' honda passport 2wd. I don't want to spend the money on a new tranny again and have the damn thing happen when it could very well be somthing else. When I got this tranny put in, the miliage was unknown however it said 038000 or so written in white chalk on the outside of the tranny.. Please HelP! |

Sound like an electrical issue. Break in the wire harness, weak battery or alt. Could be low or dirty fluid. or the range select is dirty and out of wack.

Yep, do a search for "range" or "mode" sensor. Very common 4L30E issue. It's external to the trans and an easy fix. I bet that was all that was wrong with your first trans.

except the coffee grinder reference.
the range selector mode/switch usually raises its ugly head by first, harsh upshifting from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd and progresses to harsh upshifting in all gears and even downshifting. 'splain more about this coffee grinder thing... //bc

My Mechanic is a back-yard person type frirend, but hes always been good. He asked a tranny shop and they said the tranny is going bad, (no self test or personal touch on the vehicle).
Im personally doubting him on the terms of him saying hes never heard of a tranny range sensor, so if I have to ill do it myself. My dad knows a little about cars. Wish me luck! *prays* |

Well its just a grinding noise, but if you can imagine a hard upshift, the downshift is likewise of the same noise.
Would this range mode sensor thingy, reset it self when I shut off the car and make the problem disapear? Becuase thats what its doing right now at least. On the previous tranmision this would fix it for a little while, but it would happen shortly after on the next restart. Currently I can get rid of it by shutting off and it won't show its ugly head again for weeks to a month. |

Well we, cleaned it out and the tranny is still shifting hard off and on from 2-3rd mainly. Its shifting smoother ive noticed thoe. When we opened it it looked exactly as the pictures described, my mechanic cleaned it out and put new dieeltric grease on the tracks.
The tracks in the device showed lots of wear and/or corrosion. Should I get the part replaced in its entire? Again my symptons are: Hard shift from 2-3rd and downshift to stop it shifts hard. Anything above these gears shift fine, the hardshift is not as noticeable in 1-2 but its there when it shows its ugly head. Turning the car off, removing the key, and waiting 10-15 seconds, and restarting, fixes it. I cleaned the range mode sensor and its still doing it but as I said lots of wear on the tracks. Is there anythign I should try to see and narrow the problem down? This was the problem with my first tranny, the tranny shop i took to said replace the tranny. I do not want to put 2grand again into another tranny (used). Ive only put 15k since new tranny and its been acting up slowly getting worse the entire time. It also if not just coincidental. The tranny also did the same damn thing, in the winter times. |

So no codes? I wonder if there are any stored.
When you said you replaced the tranny, was it a rebuild or was the entire unit swapped out? Did you perhaps receive a warranty with tranny repair? You never mentioned whether you checked the condition of the fluid or if it was filled to the proper level. Drop the pan and inspect the filter. I know there were TSB's for the valve body and tranny pump.

Where is a good place to check the codes? for free?
Ill get back to you on the tranny fluid etc. No check engine or check tranny light. The tranny was just a swap out with a used one. Tranny that was swapped was unknown miliage, but had writeing of "038xxx" xxx being some numbers, in white chalk on it. Came from a Izuzu Amiago. |
