Which oil filter should I use?

Scroll to the bottom. What would you rather have metal or carboard end caps? WalMart-Super Tech - This is a Champion Laboratories filter available at Wal-Mart and at less than 2/3 the price of the Fram it's one of the least expensive filters available. It's a good design, but appears to be of slighty lesser quality than the AC. Appoximate price: $2

Around 30 years ago this one company made a oil filter that used a common roll of toilet paper for the filtering media, and you could replace it too. It actually worked great, and I even think the army used them in their Jeeps

As for me, I will use ONLY K&N filters

Guess I am a pureist at heart. I feel that GM needs Delco parts, Ford needs Motorcraft ot Autolite.

Oh, and the 68 AMC in my sig. still has and uses the toilet paper filter can on the fenderwall.

Unlike sparkplugs (and few other parts) the oil filter has but one job, to filter the oil. Personally I was always more concerned about the best filtration possible, and never really paid much attention to the name on the label. I looked at every oil filter out there and settled on the K&N for the following reasons:

Sturdy 1" wrench nut makes oil filter removal very quick and easy. It's by far the easisest filter to install and remove.
The best resin-impregnated filter media that provides maximum filtering surface for contaminant removal. This allows for higher flow rates while providing outstanding filtration.
Designed to work best with Synthetic Motor Oils.
Anti-drainback valve eliminates dry starts where most wear and tear first occurs. It prevents oil from draining back into crankcase during engine shutdown.
Rolled threads provide extra protection against stripping.
The resin that holds the media fibers together, and at the same time keeps the "pores" open by keeping the fibers apart, is designed for high performance racing.

When I studied medicine I was surprised at how much work the liver actually does. One way to look at the cars oil filter is that it is like the cars liver

I want my car to be as 'healthy' as possible, so to me it just makes sense to use the filter that filters best and protect the engine as much as possible

That AMC sure has a good plate on it. Raises value quite a bit.

I wish AMC was still around. They were always ahead of their time and made some pretty good cars. But who knows, they brought the MG back so maybe someone will bring AMC back

Well DUH!!! Anything is better than Fram. Clean out the old filter with gasoline and reuse it and it'd be better than Fram

Where is the $2 Mercon V? My Wal-Mart has discontinued the $3.50 Castrol and now has a one kind works with all type. Pep Boys sells Pennzoil Mercon V for $3.85, ugh!

Maybe they're phasing it out. If that's the case then all wal-marts should start showing this same pricing soon (as long as they still have some in stock).

The owners manual specifically says to NOT use this type of 'one size fits all' ATF. It MUST say Mercon V on it.

Fram, probably made the same sompany as Spam. Neither one are any good. There was a huge issue with Fram oil fileters and Camaro/Firebirds back in the early 90's that got pretty ugly. Never touched one wince I found out about it.

Bad part is, you need to be careful when buying "house" brand filters for m parts stores that mihgt jsut be the same exact thing you were tyring not to buy
