Student tasered at UCLA library for not having his ID 11-14-06 11:30pm

Thoughts?

The initial officer announced that he'd be checking IDs soon. The student knew he didn't have his ID and still refused to leave, therefore in my opinion he deserved what he got for acting the way he did.

Its just my opinion, or whatever you'd like to consider it, for what its worth.

No ID = no access, he could have been someone off the street using the computers. Cops didn't know the difference, and he should have left when they asked him the first time. After a certain point, the cops are going to arrest you, and I have to agree that he got what he deserved.

well, i don't think the officers should hav grabed him, but he did resist and when you resist you're met with force, i'd side with the cops.

Re: Student tasered at UCLA library for not having his ID 11-14-06 11:30pm

Well, the first article said they left for a few minutes and came back and he was on his way out, and then they grabbed his arm. While not having his ID wasn't smart, if it was anything like my college computer pods, sometimes it is absolutely impossible to get a computer for hours and maybe he just finished something and was waiting for it to print or something.

Yes he should have left when first warned, but maybe he didn't realize he was missing his ID or maybe he just needed ot finish something up. The fact that he was leaving on his own accord, he shouldn't have been grabbed...that would piss me off too. As well, they kept tasering him and telling him to stand up. Seriously, if they didn't have a problem grabbing his arm when he was standing, why didn't they just grab his arm then and stand him up....I mean the kid was just freaking tasered. Judging by the bystanders, the situation was pretty screwed up.

He shouldn't have resisted, and he should have initially left, but it's not like he was being violent or posing a threat, and I think they could have dealt with the situation a whole lot better. Obviously I wasn't there, but from what I read/saw it seems like the officers were the ones that escalated the situation...not the student. And they could have stopped it earlier...especially after he said he had a medical condition.

Beligerant self-rightous asshole vs. undertrained imbecilic security guards. Of course someone's gonna get tazed.

I threw tantrums like that when I was six.

What a baby.

So how long before the lawsuit?

I think the cameraman should have been tasered, I got dizzy trying to see what was going on.

The taseree sounds like a kid screaming at his parents to buy him a candy bar

He speaks the truth. Although it doesn't surprise me to hear shit like this from California.

I don't think the officers really did anything wrong. Tazing him when he was cuffed may not have been necessary, but they gave him a fair warning before they did it. Judging by the way the kid was acting, he deserved it.

Re: Student tasered at UCLA library for not having his ID 11-14-06 11:30pm

Ummm last I checked a tazer was a weapon. Weapons are given to the police to protect themselves from a current threat or to eliminate a potential threat before it materializes. I don't see how a kid in cuffs on the floor is either of those things.

Whatever he was doing or did to require his removal from the library was his fault, true. But once someone is in cuffs, there is no need to taze them unless they're being actively resistant ie kicking and trying to break free. This kid was passively resisting... sitting on the floor like a baby. Those cops were more than capable of picking his baby ass up off the floor and carrying him to the squad car. Take him to jail and let the judge sort him out. An officers job is NOT to issue punishment as they see fit. They are there to enforce the law and protect the public.

At the end, you can hear a cop tell the argumentative kid in the white shirt "Get back or you'll get tazed too" Something tells me he was serious. This reminds me of when I was at a house party at school and the police came to break it up. The crowd was slowly but surely dispersing, but they decided to break out the tazer guns and start launching the barbs.

But I can't say I'm shocked at this. LAPD isn't exactly known for being gentle. I bet half the guys on the street WISH they were just tazed when the cops arrested them.

Re: Student tasered at UCLA library for not having his ID 11-14-06 11:30pm

One of the articles states that he was asked to leave first by library staff, then by security, and then by police. Oh, and then after pulling the 5 year old kid "go limp and resist being picked up" ninja move, he invited other students to "join his resistance". I think you got your electrical terms mixed up there, you're a conductor.

I especially love the cliche college kid anti-government sentiment thrown in for flavor "here's your patriot act". LOL! What did the patriot act have to do with you breaking a campus policy and then refusing to cooperate with campus officials/police?

I think the 3rd taze may have been a little over the top (although you can't see too well on the video), but still, if he had cooperated at ANY stage of this event he could have avoided being tazed altogether. He didn't, repeatedly. Thus he got tazed, repeatedly. He fails at life(and la resistance).

Wow. That shit carried on way longer than it needed to.

Toss the little bastid in cuffs. Warn him once. Taze his ass once if needed. After that, just pick him up and take him out to the cruiser.

Yeah, I can agree with accord. They're LA cops, for crying out loud. Anyone who doesn't know by now how much they'll beat your ass for acting out is stupid enough to deserve it.

I see no evidenc in any of the stories, videos, or accounts that authorizes the use of force on a student who was leaving anyways. Tasered 5 times? WTF? Completely unnecessary.
