Bugatti Veyron and its 4 Turbos

The 4 turbos that this beast has- is it for smoother powerflow and to reduce the turbo lag, or do the 4 turbos actually help in producing greater horse power and energy output?

Re: Bugatti Veyron and its 4 Turbos

More air in=more exhaust out=more turbo spin=more boost(18psi)

It does have 8 litres of displacement, so you would need a very well designed twin turbo system to cover the full range of rpm without lag and to build to same power. I really don't think a single turbo system would deliver the immediate power people willing to spend over a million on a car would expect.
I guess if you can afford $10000 for a set of tires as well, maintenance every few years on 4 turbos wouldn't break your wallet.

There are 600hp twin turbo VR6's out there, and I'm sure there are some 1000hp twin turbo big blocks, but if you've got the money, why not have four and barely any turbo lag?
