starting question

Hi I have a 97 Towncar with 63,000 miles on it and my question is once and a while when I go to start it the car will shut off (not stall) as soon as I back off on the key. I kind of think that it may be tempormental about how long the engine is cranked. Can anyone else confirm this or has anyone expereinced this issue? Thanks

i had a problem where the car would shut off randomly but then start right back up. turned out to be the electronic ignition module. with your car it does sound like something with the electronic ignition. i would start there first. let me ask you this: how long does the car take to start like the cranking process? i know at one point in time my car used to crank a good six seconds and then would just not start at all and then the second time i tried it would start right up. it turned out that my fuel pump was on its way out and there was no fuel pressure in the fuel rails. so there may be a possibility that the fuel is not staying in the line due to low fuel pressure, which can be a possible faulty fuel pump. let me know what the car is exactly doing.

Hi, I dont have to crank it to long (about a second or two) and it only does this when I first go to start the car. I think what I am doing is I am releasing the key before the engine catches. I think that it might be taking just a little bit longer than normal to catch because it seems that if I let the car sit for a while then it starts to get pickey.

let me ask you this: the symptoms that you are explaning; do they only happen in the morning when you first start to car or is every time the car is sitting for an extended period of time? like say you go to the store, buy something, come out and start the car...do the symptoms that you explained return?

It is very sporatic but it only seems to happen when the car is sitting for like 12+ hours. but it does not do it every time and never when the car is sitting for a short time.
