Blew up my clutch...........

Hey guys,
I have a 96 GA SE quad 4 5 speed, and now no clutch. Going from 4th to 5th the clutch pedal stuck to the floor hardly sprung back, and she hasn't been in gear yet. Checked the cylinder and it's not leaking, when i start the car with it in gear the makes a helluva jump. So tonight i'm waiting for the tow truck (had to happen 100 miles away) and going to have to fix it, but from what i've heard they aren't much fun to change (one mechanic said he'd have to charge me for 8 hours). I'm just wondernig if there are any tricks I should know or things i should be looking for.

Unfortunately the mechanic is right. The transmission must be pulled to get to the clutch and with the transverse mounted engine the job isn't an easy one.

after looking more and more into my situation it seems that the problem is more on the hydraulic side. If i press the clutch in with the master cylinder open should i not see the fluid level change in the cylinder? I've got no movement in the master cylinder at all. anybody know anything i can test to see if the hydraulics are working?

I just bled the hydrualic system there was no air bubbles and no change....I can hear movment in the tranny but the clutch won't disengage. One thing that is interesting is the clutch pedal can get stuck to the floor and not return, if my problem is in the clutch why would this effect the pedal?

Crawl under the car and watch the fork assembly. Have someone press on the pedal and if the fork moves then the hydraulic clutch is probably OK. However, based on your description I think it may be the hydraulic master cylinder has gone bad. That would account for why the pedal stays on the floor. You may want to replace it as they do go out periodically. If the fork moves but the clutch will not disengage then it is possible that the fork is broken or that the pressure plate has gone bad.

when you say fork assembly what exactly are u refering to?

I crawled under the front and looked threw the little slot underneath the tranny (im pretty sure i can see the flywheel) but there is movment down there when the cltuch is pressed, not much but some.

I agree with GTP Dad about your hydraulic master cylinder being bad and or your pressure plates broken.

About the only way to know for sure is pull it!
