Engine outline light on dash
I just bought a 2000 Jeep Cherokee and today this yellow(what appears to be a warning) light came on, in the shape of an engine. I don't have a manual yet. It's not the "check engine light." The Jeep has 89, 233 miles on it and seems to be running fine. I have ordered a manual but it hasn't come in yet and have been unsuccessful in finding a diagram of the dashboard online. Could anyone tell me what this could mean so that I can avoid a mechanic? Should I even be driving it at this point?

The picture of the engine is usually the Cel...
Pull a code...go to AutoZone or whatever is available in your region that will do that for you. Oh yeah...welcome to the Jeep AF... |

Re: Engine outline light on dash
You guys are right. My assumption was wrong(that's not the first time and won't be the last). I was trying to make out the light that wasn't lit, next to the engine light and saw the word "check", so I assumed it was "Check Engine." I've taken a closer look since and it's "Check Guages." Ok, I'm headed to Auto Zone or Advanced. Thanks! And sorry to bother you with such a dumb question.
Thanks for the Welcome! |

Re: Engine outline light on dash
I'm betting the codes have something to do with the post CAT O2 sensor. Thatis about the mileage my CEL came on.
I haven't fixed mine b/c I'm still getting 21-22mpg and I don't want it messed up, since most everyone else seems to get 16-17mpg. |

Re: Engine outline light on dash
The code returned is P1494 which indicates a bad Leak Detection Pump. I spoke to the dealership and the B06 recall has not been performed on this Jeep either. The Leak detection Pump is $85 plus approx. $100 labor at the dealership. I think I'm going in next week(while on vacation) to have both done. Anyone out there think that I should not get the LDP fixed?

Re: Engine outline light on dash
Why are they charging you labor for a recall?
Just buy the pump....whatever that is and put it in yourself. |

Re: Engine outline light on dash
The recall doesn't have anything to do with the Leak Detection Pump. I don't have to pay anything for the recall. I'm going to see how involved the work is to replace the pump and decide from there whether or not I'll do it myself. Again, thanks for everyone's comments.

I did a search for that for you:
http://autorepair.about.com/library/a/1h/bl010h.htm $89 is cheap and should be easy to replace, but you might try clean it and checking the contacts for it. Then disconnect the battery to clear the CEL and see what happens. Edit: Try replacing the gas cap and clearing the CEL. Last edited by AlohaBra; 11-15-2006 at 07:37 PM. |

Re: Engine outline light on dash
Here's an update. Now that the rain has stopped, the check engine light has gone off, without my intervention. Go figure.

Re: Engine outline light on dash
Sounds like it's time to check the wiring that's exposed to the elements for areas that aren't insulated anymore....an electrical short might be causing the problem.

I did a search and apparently other Jeep owners had the same experience...temperature related (cold weather).
Change the gas cap for $15...I got a locking one (so people won't steal my gas)...just to make sure the fuel system is pressurizing as efficiently as possible. Call it a done deal. |
