Re: 96 Grand Am Instrument Gages Going Crazy???

Reading my crystalball;
I seee a new dash cluster

Thier is a couple years that have this trouble, 94-96 , For some reason they just crap out, most likly due to bad solder joints/ciruits.

Your best bet is to check local salvage yards, then hit ebay for a used one(that works of coarse) for around $50ish.
Just remember to disconnect the battery when you remove and replace the cluster.

Hope that helps, and Welcome to AF !

btw please kill the caps, its like you are yelling

Not realy.
You can check all you fuses and maybe the wiring to the dash cluster, but its most likly your cluster is just going out.

Re: 96 Grand Am Instrument Gages Going Crazy???

Yes sometimes you do need to do a relearn procedure.

Turn the key to the "on" position and leave it on for at least 10min,
Leave it off for 1-2 min.
You might have to repeat this 3 times.

You should see the security light come on(if its not already) or flash then go out when its done.

Re: 96 Grand Am Instrument Gages Going Crazy???

it is that simple.

It can take up to three trys,
and sometimes it'll relearn it in one.

The dealer just figures the full time on it so $100 is about right for 1.5hrs of work.

Re: 96 Grand Am Instrument Gages Going Crazy???

I just replaced the gauge cluster on my 96 GA also. Now I am having problems with the anti theft system. Sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesn't. My question is, when I go thru the relearn procedure and wait for the anti theft light to quit blinking, is it supposed to just quit blinking or go out? I have had both happen. And sometimes it blinks 5 or 6 six times and quits. Even after it quits blinking I can't always start the car. Doesn't seem the be a pattern that I can see. Dealer is telling me I need to replace the ignition switch. Is that legitimate thing? The car has 128K miles.

Re: 96 Grand Am Instrument Gages Going Crazy???

Welcome to AF marvinrb !

Sorry if I wasnt clear on that security light, it should go out after flashing 5-6X.

IF the ignition switch is bad then yes it would need replaced, and could be why you are having trouble with the security system.

try the relearn 3X , if the security light doesnt go out then you have other issues.

Hope that helped!
