chevrolet cavalier fuel pump problems

Hi. I have a 2003 cavalier that I just bought and it broke down on me one night. The guy at the dealership said it was my fuel pump and I am not saying he is lying, but is there a chance that it could be something a bit more simpler than that? And before anyone suggests it, the car had gas in it. I just find it hard to believe that the car is only 3 yrs old and it already needs a new fuel pump. Any suggestions/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: chevrolet cavalier fuel pump problems

spray some starter fluidd in the throttle body if it fires up ,(no it wont stay running) then most likely you will need a fuel pump. things can go bad on brand new cars

Re: chevrolet cavalier fuel pump problems

lol starter fluid..

When you turn the key to ACC (just before it starts the car) you shoul be able to hear the fuel pump kick in.. it will run for like 2 secs.. you should hear it coming from the back seat..

Ive had my fuel pump die on my 2000 cav.. we got bad fuel in our area and its a common problem around here.. bad fuel kills pump.

If you can still hear the pump working i would check your fuel filter.. its a cheap ($10) part and its very easy to replace.. it may be clogged and not allowing fuel to reach the engine.

Oh and if it is your pump.. be ready to shell out some cash.. i paid $680 at my mechanics shop to get it replaced.. the pump comes with the entire sending unit so its a $400-500 part.

Re: chevrolet cavalier fuel pump problems

The exact same thing happened to my moms 2003 cavalier! The starter fluid trick worked so we went and bought a new pump last night and it was $260! We are doing the work ourselves just to save another 3-4 hundred dollars! It's not cheap, thats for sure!
