hi! 2001 Impala and I have clunking noise when I turn, I was told it was the lower steering coupling, anyone had one changed? I've gotten two very different prices, $350 to change the whole thing, $150 for a kit that replaces only the broken parts. any comments?

Re: clunking noise
I've not experienced it yet but plenty of people have and Gm will not back it.

Re: clunking noise
I pulled the steering shaft out of my 2000 impala this weekend because it had a clunking sound while stopping and accelerating but not on bumps.Thought it was starting to seize. The shaft was perfect in regards to movement, but the bolt that connects it to the rack was loose, looks like the shaft was replaced and they forgot to completely tighten the bolt. Now the car is quiet.if you attempt to take out the shaft yourself it isnt that hard to do,1 bolt up under the dash and 1 bolt on top of the rack then just slide it off and out, took about 15mins(had to figgure out how first)to get it off and about 10 to put it back.

Re: clunking noise
My 2002 Impala does the same thing and has for almost 2 years. I never fixed it because from all that I read it was more of a simple anouance then anything.

Re: clunking noise
I had a clunking when turning or going over bumps. They said it was a loose engine frame, it sounded just like the IS Shaft that i had to replace on a couple of other gm cars.
