Loud as Heck squealling

i just obtained a new(to me) '96 geo metro 3 cyl., 123k miles, good working condition metro 2 door. One problem with it, it has two seperate accessory belts on the motor, and when you initially start the vehicle it has an ear piercing squeall coming from somewhere around the pulleys. It'll go away after 30-60 seconds of running. Am i right in thinking its probably the Idler pully, or do they have idler pulleys. I haven't had time to look close at things yet. If so, is it the pulley down toward the bottom of the motor?

Re: Loud as Heck squealling

As soon as you start the engine turn on the headlights and heater fan, if the noise becomes more intense, it is probably a loose alternator belt. If it has A/C, the compressor will make that kind of noise when it starts going bad.

Re: Loud as Heck squealling

You really gotta tighten that alternator belt down hard. Be careful what you pry against when you do that. I mean it's gotta be really tight. Turning on headlights and the heater fan will put a drag on that alternator/motor and will reveal a "loose" alternator belt.
