GTI or VR6

I am looking at buying a golf.
Which is the one to go for GTI 20ltr or VR6 2.8 auto.
Here in NZ we get Jap imports so the 99% of VR6's are Auto very rear to find a manual VR6.
Heaps of GTI 20ltr manuals.
