'94 cav too much draw car dying

so i work at a car audio shop and i stick to car audio i know a little bit about car mechanics in general but mostly just how to wire stereos. So i just got a new amp and it's quite huge. It says to put a 120 amp in line fuse in but i just threw in an 80. I don't really ever wanting my system to be pulling a ton of power anyways. 80 amps is plenty for what i'm looking to do. Anyways here's my problem, i've been driving around lately and my lights and dash lights dim a ton!!! a lot more than u can imagine. Today i started driving off and my abs lighs comes on, my check engine light comes on, and my battery light comes on and off. So i was thinking there was too much draw from my amp. so i shut the radio off but my check engine light is still on and my abs is still on. i pulled into my driveway and the car died as i cranked the steering wheel too far. I'm assuming this is a bad alternator but would it really make my check engine light and abs light come on?

Re: '94 cav too much draw car dying

I dont recomend amps on any car, On the side of the alternator tells you how many watts it produces. i seriously doubt it produses 80 amps. If your alternater is going out, most of the time at "nite" youl experince DIM head lighting for short perodes of time. if the battery light flickers, thats indecating that the rectifier in the alternator is going bad, these are diodes, it's a small chip inside you'r alternator that can be replaced by alternator dealers.

i would recomend charging your battery! taking that amp out, and see if you still have those problems. if so i would recomend changing the alternator and dont use the amp for about a week or so to see if all is good. if so, install the amp back and blow onother diode

For the record, When your jumpig people off, Ribbing the engine just sucks juse from the battery, it dont produce more power. so when you kick the car down, your using a temperary charge that the battery is holding, when you get to your desired speed, the alternator will then recharge the battery back up for your next turbo boost.
