Trouble filling gas tank - backpressure

I'm asking this question for a friend. She has a 98 Toyota Corolla and has trouble getting gas because the pumps keep shutting off too soon. It's not from sensitive pumps. Does anybody have any ideas for a simple, inexpensive way to release backpressure while she's filling up?

hmmm... I had a similar problem with my '78 jeep. The most effective workaround was to put the nozzle in upside down.

That's a clever idea. Thanks, I'll pass it on.

I don't know if this is related to her problem, but if I pushed in the nozzle too far, it would stop. Perhaps because it thought the gas tank was full? Pulling out the nozzle so that 1/2 to 3/4 of the nozzle is inside the gas 'port' (?) would solve the problem.

Trouble filling tank

I am also having trouble filling the tanks for my Monte Carlo and a GMC Savana, both GM products, I also drive an F150 and it has no troubles. Is there something in the build of the GM products, maybe the tank design thats bad, this cant be an isolated thing to just my autos.

Well if there's backpressure, that's because the fill up tube is too small in diameter. Getting it replaced wouldn't be expensive and would probably fix everything. However, pulling the nozzle back would fix that and the angle of the nozzle also helps. Try to leave a vent between the nozzle and the fillup tube.
