Unhappy Whinning sound and trans shifts rough

I have a 2000 impala LS with 56,000 miles.A few days ago we were driving home from a weekend trip. As i started to accelerate i heard a winning sound and at the same time the trans shifted rough from low. this continued the 150 miles it took me to get home.fluid level is fine. The next day no problem at all.So far this problem occured 1 more time in 3 days. No warning light came on. Reading the forum can this be the start of a bad internal trans pump or a pressure control solenoid??? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Whinning sound and trans shifts rough

Welcome to AF. This may be the pre cursor of the common issue of the trans pcs failing, a full trans scan would reveal the problem for a possible p1811.

Thank you for the reply. My local transmission shop wants $600.00 total to replace the PCS. He says it's about a 6hr job but will not guarantee it.He says it could also be an internal problem. With only 56,000 miles he thinks it should solve the problem. Is that a fair price?

Thanks,

Yes about right, if the trans does not slip and the fluid is not burnt you should be alright, is this for the entire solenoid pack, ask him.

Re: Whinning sound and trans shifts rough

My Olds Intrigue does a similar thing. It has the same transmission as your impala. The sound is there because the pressure control solenoid is giving a faulty reading and is commanding max pressure. Because of this, the shifts are nearly instantaneous and very rough, though there should be no slipping. If you rev it higher before allowing it to shift, it will not be so bad, as the pressure is in the range of where it should be at a high-rpm shift. You may not have another problem with this for a while, but it will most likely come back here and there. Mine does it a few times a month, particularly when the tranny gets hot from sittting in traffic and the torque converter is allowed to slip alot, building up heat. Typically, all I need to do is pull over and shut the car off for 5 min and then it's fine for a few weeks. Eventually, the pcs will need replaced. My olds dealer - note the word dealer - quoted me $410 for parts and labor, saying the labor was 4 hrs. Still have yet to get mine fixed and it's been doing this for over a year now. Good luck.
