2002 impala will not start
I am working on a 2002 impala with a 3.4 in it. Fuel pump is not working. I swapped the fuel pump with a good one. Changed the fuel pump relay. Checked all the fuses. It cranks over but will not fire. I did try the relearning processes for the key. Twice when I tryed to start it the message center said security but I have not been able to get it to do it again. It does have spark. Any ideas? I do have a parts car so I can swap anything suggested. I am stumped. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 2002 impala will not start
Do you hear the fuel pump prime? Try a shot of wd-40 or carb cleaner in the intake. If it fires then dies, it's a fuel delivery issue. If not, its possibly a blown head gasket/compression issue.

Re: 2002 impala will not start
Got it running after researching on this forum. I blew out the ignition with compressed air. Left the drivers door open when I tryed to start it and it fired right up. Have not had any issues since. I believe it had somthing to do with the security system.

Re: 2002 impala will not start
You most likely have an ignition switch going bad... I've read about this exact same problem many times in this forum over the past couple of years... I'm waiting for mine to go on my 2001...

Re: 2002 impala will not start
The car is back again. I have tried the suggestions. Sprayed carb cleaner in intake and it did fire. I swiched the ignition and it would not turn over. I then switched the body control computer, main computer and ignition,(diconected the factory radio so it would not lock) from a known good running car. Did the same thing it cranks over has spark but no fuel pressure. I had a friend crank it over while I checked to see if power went to relay, it does. Pulled the fuel pump cover of and it is not getting power there. Put power to fuel pump and it turned on and car will start. I do not think it is the security as when i switched just the ignition it would not even turn over with the security light on. Any other ideas? Thank you

Re: 2002 impala will not start
if I remember correctly if the ignition security feature is at fault you will have no response (no starter movement or engine cranking) when you turn the key.

Re: 2002 impala will not start
I found another thread that said if the oil pressure switch/relay is bad the fuel pump would not work. Where is this located? And what does it look like?

Re: 2002 impala will not start
The fuel pump is not tied into the oil switch any more like the obd-1 cars were. I say your problem is still in the ignition switch/ignition cylinder. Swapping a BCM from another car is useless, as the BCM has to be programmed to your vehicles specific VIN, then a key relearn needs to be done so it recognizes the key as a valid one for the vehicle.

Re: 2002 impala will not start
You are right if you just switch the bcm it goes into security and will not even crank over. That is why I switched the ignition, bcm, and main computer in the air box, and disconected the factory radio. Then it cranks but still has no power to fuel pump. Just in case I swaped those parts from the car that won't start into the good one that I took the parts out of and it fired right up. So my problem is not in the ignition, bcm or computer in addition to the fuel pump and reley that I had put in before. It must be something else but I have no idea. I have tried two different known good ignitions and keys. After the relearning procsess they make the car do the same thing, cranks fine but no power to the fuel pump. What else could it be?

Re: 2002 impala will not start
if you switched out the ignition lock with another one then you just took out the bad part and replaced it with a good one. Then it sounds like you put the bad part back in.

Re: 2002 impala will not start
The ignition is not bad as I tried it in the other impala and it worked in that car.

Re: 2002 impala will not start
I have managed to fix the car. There was a loose connection in a plug below the power distribution center. Traced the fuel pump wires from the tank to there and had no continuity in the wires as they traveled threw the plug. Wigled the wires and it started. Wigled the wires while it was running and it shut off. Took the plug appart and squished the conector a little and put it back together. All is good that ends good. Thanks for the suggestions.
