1995 Dodge Intrepid High-pitched Hum
I have a 1995 Dodge Intrepid, 6 cylinder, automatic trans.
When I start the car, it makes a high pitched hum (not a squeal), it is similar to the sound that a copy machine would make (maybe a little bit higher pitched), only louder. It various slightly in pitch and intensity along with the RPM's of the car. It only seems to happen in cold weather and after I drive it for anywhere from 30sec. to 3 minutes it goes away. I'd appreciate any help. I've already pumped some cash into it recently and don't really want to put in any more if I can get away with it .

Re: 1995 Dodge Intrepid High-pitched Hum
My '97 Voyager and my '97 Intrepid do the same thing. I'm not certain what it is, but I'm pretty sure it's nothing serious, or at least nothing worth fussing with until it gets worse.

I was researching an intrepid problem for my brother when I read your post. I have a 94 Saturn SL1 that had a similar sound. I call it the toy car sound. As the RPM goes up the pitch went up. Because the 'rev' sound would rachet as the gears changed. rummm, rumm, rumm, I feared a trans problem.
The Saturn thread on this forum suggested a pulley bearing and it was. It was the idler pulley gone bad. There are two pulleys on my saturn belt, the tensioner, and the idler pulley. Replacing the idler pulley eliminated the sound and improved the performance which had been dragging for years as the sound grew. No mechanic could ever pinpointed the sound. I had to ask them to check the pulley. Now I recognize that sound on many older GM cars. About 1 in 10. I never heard it on a newer car. Maybe this is your problem |
