98 Mountaineer Ball Joints Need Help Please

I am on assignment in the Middle East and my wife just contacted me about our 98 Mercury Mountaineer. The shop which historically has ripped us off by taking advantage of my wife in my absence told her $1200 to replace the ball joints. Is this a reasonable cost or are we being ripped off again? Can anyone suggest a cheaper alternative in San Antonio, Texas area? I appreciate any advise or assistance as it is hard for me to deal with such issues while away.

I would have her call a PEP Boys store if they are in the Houston area and get a price. I think the price is way to high. They give a lifetime warranty. Otherwise have her call NTW or another chain.

I don't know if you have had this "repair" done yet, but I am currently dealing with the same issue!! I purchased new tires for my 97 Mountaineer (at Sams wholesale), and was told I needed an alignment. So I proceeded to Meineke across the street! They advised me after keeping my truck for 2 HOURS... that they couldn't do my alignment because it needed lower ball joints!! (They wanted 450.00 for it. ) The point I am trying to make here.. is GET A SECOND OPINION!!! A friend of mine came over tonight (after I purchased the parts for under $50), pulled off my tire & guess what!!?? THEY DID NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED!!! Can you guess what business I will be at as soon as they reopen next week!!?? Now WHY couldn't Meineky just do the 69.99 alignment is what I want to know!?? They are going to regret not doing it...
Hopefully your wife was not taken advantage of.
A big Thank You for Serving our Country! Happy New Year!
