240 project

Hey guys,

I used to be on this forum as importboom but i changed it up cause i didnt want to retrieve my password, some of you might remember, or not.
But i have finally been able to purchase my 240sx. My dad and I have been playing with ideas for vehicles, i was going to get something new but that would mean i would have to work close to full time and that becomes hard with school. So, I am going to purchase a 240sx 95-97 and plan on swapping the engine and transmission which makes finding one easier. My questions include.

Price for car- 5500-7500, miles dont matter due to engine and tranny swap.

im looking mainly for the price of the engine, where to order one or find the sr20de( can you find these pre-turbo'd?) I thought i could but i am just starting research. Also the price of the engine swap roughly.
What kind of transmission... Obviously a manual 5 speed but i guess im clueless on the transmission question. But the price of the transmission and install.

So basic questions.

Price of sr20de or det.
installed
Price of Transmission and what kind?
installed.

Thanks guys.

Also planning all new suspension. just incase of any of you wondering

Re: 240 project

i dont realy know anything about the DE
wich sr20 u plannin on puttin in ther (if turboed) ( S13,14,15)?
the price of tranny is aslo gonna depend on wich one yoou want.
the S15 tranny is a six speed but its not verry reliable.

u plan on doing the labor yourself because that is also going to make a big difference in the price

Re: 240 project

I honestly would go for it, but I have no where to do it. my pops is a clean freak and my garage is out of the question. but what sr would you suggest? im getting a s14, so i would guess the s14. I mean im still in the research stage. I guess prices of all of them would help but if thats alotta work just hit me with the s14 for now.

Re: 240 project

search search and search... theres a FAQ stickied at the top of the page that tells u everything u need to know.. but honestly i would be willing to bet you dont swap an SR in your car considering, as of now you dont have a clue about the motor or what is involved in putting it in.

...save a 240, buy a civic...

and the s15 tranny's arent unreliable, they actually hold up to 400 whp in drift cars and street cars around the world, its just that the actual gears are smaller b/c they fit one more in the same sized tranny, so technically speaking they are weaker, but not so weak that anyone on this forum would ever make enough power to break them.

Re: 240 project

the so-called "pre turbo'ed sr20de" motors were available in japan. they were in the non-turbo kouki 180sx models (duh) which push ~145? i dont remember. I'm not sure if the sr20de's in the US, such as in the B15 sentras, are the same as those either. I would just ignore them all together since i've heard you need to replace internals to get them up to par with stock det motors. Which in expense terms... would probably make up for each other. "General" differences in red(s13) and black tops(late s13/180sx and s14) are the mileage and usage with exception of the S15 sr which is indicated by the slanted gasket cover towards the back (not definite on this.. someone verify for me) which has ~250hp rather then then 205 in S13/14 motors.

zilvia.net, 240sx.org, 240sxforums.com, and of course Google would have more info regarding this topic.

Re: 240 project

if you want turbo then there's no reason why you should run an sr20de. the high compression pistons wont allow you to run much boost for very long. the main difference between s13 and s14/s15 is the variable valve timing on newer engines and slightly stronger internals, doesnt really matter which one you get, but it would be cheaper to get an older OBD1 engine. the sr20det and sr20de are both available on 91+ silvias maybe 91+ 180sx? anything older was the ca18det. and yeah, the s15 tranny is fine.

Re: 240 project

read the FAQ before posting dumb questions. And the S15 tranny isnt in any way 'unreliable', its just tougher to put down lots of power without beefing it up. For his setup, an S15 SR would probably be plenty.

Re: 240 project

Yeah, simple question was what the cost was. I know the differences.

Re: 240 project

no offense but, if you knew the difference, youd know not only the prices, but youd know that SR20's do come "pre-turbo'd". check out a couple different sites... search search search

Re: 240 project

i remember your old screen name.

well price varies depending on who you get it from. The local shop here will get you a sr20(with tranny), with all new gaskets(except for head), all new fluids, installed, everything checked out to work ok, and run perfectly for 6 grand. Oh yea thats with the price of aftermarket clutch and installation of that. May include some other little things too(radiator hose's etc)....i forget.

To make things easier for you, dont bother with anything sr20de. Just go sr20det. Do a s14 sr with the factory 5-speed that comes with it. Alot of places to look and choose from. Im assuming you have shops around you since you plan on having this installed? I would go to them and ask what they charge. Thats really the only option you can go, unless you do the swap yourself which it sounds like that was a no.

Re: 240 project

I wasnt planning on jumping in head first. I was just looking for some quick details, and I did plan on researching. And i do know the difference between the two, it has just been about 6 months since ive read up on any of it. I wasn't looking for so much conflicting interest. But thanks. The sr20 is the motor i want, price wise is a different story. I will be paying for most of the engine swap myself. Didn't mean to bring up such a FAQ but i forgot how angry it makes people and how annoying it is.

For price wise, im guessing i can go with turboing a ka24 for a lower cost with quicker and cheaper results.

Sorry for the uproar.
