Blower motor not working on lower settings. Could it be the resistors or resistor mod

I have a 2000 oldsmobile Intrigue. My blower motor seams to work on the higher settings, but the lower ones it does not do anything. Are there resistors or a resistor module to replace? Or something else? Can anybody give me some directions. Any information will help. Thanks guys.

Hi
I would certainly guess the resistor module is bad. Here is a link to GMpartsdirect.com. Click on "image" next to the 2000 blower motor. I think that item 25 is your resistor module, which you can find at rockauto.com for $23.

Edit: I see the link didn't work. Enter the year/make/model. Then select AC/Heat/Ventilation, then heater, then blower motor..

Good Luck

Thanks for the replay. Does anybody know how to replace the resistor module? Any directions on how to get to it? Any tricks? Thanks.

Re: Blower motor not working on lower settings. Could it be the resistors or resistor

The resistor is behind the blower motor, against the firewall, on the passenger side. There are 3 clips holding a trim peice under the glovebox. Pull them out, and remove the trim. You will see the blower motor there; remove the three screws holding it in. It is attached to the squirrel cage so it takes some work to get it out. There is also an air tube coming from the blower motor than can just be pulled off. Then there is the wire harness that comes from the resistor. Unplug the harness and follow it back to the resistor. The resistor is a PITA to get to because it is so close to the firewall. There are two screws on the firewall side and one on the front side, towards you. I have a tip: only remove the screw on your side, then loosen the two on the firewall side and you can slide the resistor out. It will save you lots of time because the back two screws are a bear to work.

You can also get the resistor from AutoZone as a special order, or from AutoZone.com as well.

Also important to note is WHY the resistor is bad. This can be because either:
1) It just went bad; it can happen.
2) The blower motor is going bad. If the blower motor makes any strange, loud noises, then the motor is going bad and you need to replace it before it kills your new resistor. The motor is easier to find than the resistor, AutoZone or NAPA will likely have it in stock.
3) There is water leaking into the car from the windshield run-off. The water leaks into the cabin, runs along the firewall, and into the passenger side. If you get enough water flowing into the car, it will get the resistor wet and then the resistor can blow if you run the blower while it is wet. This is a pain to fix. I had instructions on how to do this once, but lost them. EDIT: Found this thread that discusses this leak, the last couple posts give very brief instructions: Water leak in passenger side

Good luck!

Re: Blower motor not working on lower settings. Could it be the resistors or resistor mod

Nobody responsed so I just decided to find the resistor. Since I knew where the blower motor was I just follow the wires. It was a PITA to fix it. I just took out the front screw & loosed the other one & pulled & it came out. I am not sure if I got all three back in, but it is a tight fit so it should be okay. I am sorry I did not post that I got it already. I have been gone. I am sure it will help out somebody searching some time. I really do thank you for getting back to me anyways. I will have to get an eye out for the water thing. I think the people having the water issue do not have the cabin air filter in place. I think that works like a water shed also. Hopefully my just went out. I know they do sometimes. My top levels 4 & 5 worked before so maybe I ill be okay. Have a good one.
