rear shocks - wrong gap *solved NM

so heres the deal,
i have 2 84 rabbit L coupes. one has all the nice performance parts, the other is totally stock. im currently swaping all the parts from the hot car to the stock car. (the hot one has a bent frame).
today i swapped the rear shocks over and theres now like a 3-4 inch difference in the gap between the tire and the wheelwell. it looks stupid, like a jacked up muscle car, except this is a rabbit.
any ideas? i basically jumped up & down on the rear bumper but it didnt do anything to help. ive torqued the nuts already too
also, the shocks are pretty new kyb's with stock springs, the ride height was fine in the other car..
