Help with GM Oil Life Sys.

Hi all,

I have a 2002 Silverado with about 47K miles. Every time I change the oil and try to reset the GM Oil Life system, the process gives me fits. I have consulted the owner's manual multiple times, maybe someone here can give a tip or trick to doing it.

When, in the following sequence, should I depress and release the gas pedal?(3 times in 5 seconds or less)

Key is turned to run
Red battery picture appears in "message center"
Red battery picture disappears in "message center"
~1 second elapses
Red battery picture appears again in "message center" (stays illuminated a little longer than first time)
Red battery picture disappears in "message center"
1-2 seconds elapse
"Change engine oil" message flashes 5 times

I have tried the gas pedal pushing (3 times in 5 seconds) at different points in the sequence above. I have removed the floor mats to make sure I fully depress the pedal. From what I have read here and in other forums, the oil life monitor is a great thing, but trying to reset the system by using the gas pedal is a real hassle.

If there are any ideas, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks,

ph919

Don't even follow the damn thing. It's hardly accurate. In the 6 years I had my Silvy it probably came on a handful of times.

I have an 2003 with 5.3

My owners manual says

"to reset the engine oil life system press and hold the select button while the engine oil life is displayed".

Re: Help with GM Oil Life Sys.

Pressing the gas pedal always works for me. Sometimes not the first time, but after a couple it'll finally go away. I never use it anyway either. It is very inconsistent plus I use full synthetic anyway which doesn't require as many changes, although I do it anyway.

Re: Help with GM Oil Life Sys.

Funny;
I also have a 2002; but mine has 104,000 miles... I'll trade for your 47K truck!

Anyway; I had my oil changed today; Here's what I do:
-Get in and close door.
-Put Key and and turn to first click before engine start
-Stomp on the gas pedal 4 times; not like I'm pissed off; but like trying to choke a carburated (sp) engine
-Turn key all the way to start truck
-Check Oil shows briefly in the DIC; then disappears.
It never shows again until it's time to change my oil based on it's algorithm.

Hope it helps.

Jem's tip won't work because he has the true DIC, not our cheesey little system.. If you really want a laugh; try to figure out how to get the doors to not lock @ 15 mph; it's worse than patting your head and rubbing your stomach.....

Re: Help with GM Oil Life Sys.

I have a 2000 5.3
Mine works fine..
I turn the key to the "ON" position (Position before "start")
Your "ding ding" sound goes on and your battery light is on
During this time I will step on the gas pedal 3 times within 5 secs (but really I do it within 2 secs)
The check engine lite with blink then disapear.
I will start the truck for a min.. then turn it off and restart the truck to make sure the check engine lite does not come back on.
So far have not have any issues. I have over 150K miles on it too.
