major oil leakege!

not really a major leak! well ive did an oil change last july and just did one now but before i changed it this month i cheack the oil level and found out that it was low . when i did oil change i was underneath the car and seen wet spots all over even below the filter on the chasis. it mostly seems to be coming out around the oil pan. could ths be a bad gasket. too ive noticed that the oil has been coming out around the head gasket just below the timign thing with the coil wire and the soark plugs. (sry drawing a blank on this part so plz refresh my mind) (damn u mind(i hate my mind))

Re: major oil leakege!

My car leaks a bit of oil around the head gasket, as well. Its under the distributor

As for the oil pan, more than likely a bad gasket...

Re: major oil leakege!

yeah i think it is a bad gasket because i went to try and tighten bolts a little more but they were pretty tight yet. would u know how much it owuld cost me to replace it if i take it to a mechanic or if i do it my self? like i said i changed the oil at the end of last month and today i checked oil and it was low again, i dont know where it is going. well yesterday we had like 2 in. of snow and i was driving and everytime i step on the gas i would see a big could of exhaust smoke in my rear view mirror, ive noticed lately that it seems to put out more fumes than usual. so i either might try and change the oil pan seal and sometime in the next year change the head gasket. like they say, when u buy a used car u should expect everything to be brand new. to i know a kid that has a 94 bird that is a v6, purple with racing stripes on it. he said he wants to get a new car and i was thinking maybe i can buy his from him.

Re: major oil leakege!

i got a 2.0l engine with an OHC and throttle body injection. u guys know where the breather tube and filter is, well ive actually been seeing alot of oil in the airfilter and tb housing and i took tube off where the breather tube housing is that their is oil in their, so im thinking that the valve gaskets are shot, woudl u know if they are easy to cange? and how much would it cost probably?

Re: major oil leakege!

There is no breather filter. There is a breather hose on the passenger end of the valve cover, on the back, going into the air filter box...

Re: major oil leakege!

in your picture 89sunbird, the square box at the air filter housing end of the hose coming off the valve cover IS the breather filter. Two very common oil leak issues on the 2.0 are valve cover gaskets, and the distributor base gasket. Almost any car can develop and oil pan gasket leak as they age, so it's not out of the question either. Make sure your PCV valve is clean, as it is responsible for keeping crankcase pressure down.
