99 Grand Prix GT Front Wheel Hubs

My 99 GP has developed a small shake through the steering column that is noticable at 65 + mph. I can also notice a shake at very low speeds while turning the wheel. I had new tires installed recently so I asked them to receck the balance. They said it was fine and that the front wheel hubs are worn out. The car has 125,000 miles on it.
Does this sound like symtoms of the wheel hubs? If I remove the hub assemblies are there any measurments (runout.endplay, etc) that can confirm that the hubs are worn?

Thanks in advance

Re: 99 Grand Prix GT Front Wheel Hubs

Based on your mileage wheel bearings are a possibility. You can jack it up, properly support, and do the pull test on the wheel. The proper way is to remove the wheel and put lug nuts back on to hold the disc rotor. Grab rotor with both hands pull in and out and then at the 9/3 and 12/6 o'clock positions. Bearing runout/clearance is tight per GM specs.

Re: 99 Grand Prix GT Front Wheel Hubs

bnaylor,

Thanks for the quick reply. I will set up an indicator on them and check the end play. I can get my hands on indicators from .001" to .00005" / division. What would you expect a good hub to read?

Thanks

You're welcome. According to the GM service manual anything over .005" or .13mm means the bearings have wear.
