Cool Problem

I've been working on my GSX for quite some time now. It's basicly just been sitting doing nothing because It currently doesn't run. I need some help now or some ideas.

The car has a fresh built 2.3 stroker in it and is stock except for what I'm about to tell you about below.

When I got the car initially from the shop it ran fine, than it blew an alternator belt. I replaced the alternator belt and the car started right up and ran fine. When I was about to get home It just died out of no where. I was able to start it up just fine and drive it for a bit more. Eventually the car died to the point that it would no longer start anymore.

At this point I started trouble shooting. I have spark and all my ignition is great.

Me and my friend decided to replace the fuel pump. I was going to upgrade anyway so why not just do it now? The timing on the car was retarded slightly because the car was running lean so I was sure the pump had probably just finally gone bad on me. So I replaced the stock fuel pump with a Walboro 255HP. ( I Also did the fuel pump rewire) I go to start the car, the car turns over, runs super rough and dies. Every time after this I start it, and it turns over and runs for a second or two and dies. Each time it runs pretty rough.

I than bought an AFPR to install on there. Not really thinking it would fix the problem I figured I was going to need one anyway because I just put that monster fuel pump on there anyway.

I adjusted the AFPR To stock fuel pressure settings and tried to start the car, and of course it's doing the same thing as it was before.

I can't really think of what it could be? Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure the ignition is good, I've tested the plugs and I'm getting spark. The plugs and wires are brand new. The only thing I can think of is maybe the injectors. Any ideas?

Re: Problem

Timing. Check and re-check. I'm willing to bet that you jumped a tooth or 2.

How would I have jumped a tooth?

The fuel pump was bad when I replaced it the car actually turned over and started, before that it wouldn't do shit.

Thing is it was only part of the problem. Now to find the rest of the problem hehe.

Re: Problem

For timing. Might as well just check it out. Also, hows the fuel filter? Check for boost leaks? I know when I forgot to rehook up the BOV dump tube she ran rugged as hell and died a few seconds later until I put it back on.

Re: Problem

Sometimes the timing belts will stretch when they're brand new, I can't tell you how many times I've seen brand new belts jump after being on for a day or two. Happened to me once.

Re: Problem

Hmm. I'll check it out. It is an OEM belt and the shop were the car was assembled put it on. So I would think that if it was going to stretch enough to skip a tooth it would have done it when it was with them, as they had the car and drove it around for a while before I got it.

Fuel filter is brand new, No boost leaks that I can find.

Re: Problem

Question. How can I check/set the timing when I can't get the car to run or idle?

Re: Problem

You don't check/set timing while the car is running. You pull off the timing covers while the engine is off, get Piston #1 at TDC and then line up all other timing marks. It's not like an old v8 motor. We don't use timing lights, we use timing marks set into the crank pulley/block, and cam gears, just in case you didn't know.

Yeah for mechanical timing.

You still need to use a timing light to set the timing through the CAS.

I'll check the timing marks to see if they are all good to go.

Re: Problem

Yup, but Scott is right, we were talking about the timing belt timing, not ignition timing. Also, yeah I think you have to have an idling car to be able to adjust the ignition timing, but IIRC they didnt make it adjustable enough to where it wouldnt run due to f'ed up ignition timing.

Re: Problem

Yeah IIRC ignition timing is adjustable ~10* advanced and retarded and that would only make your car run rough not keep it from running.
