Question ABS Light On & Check Engine Sometimes...

Hey All, I hope you may be able to help me here. I have a '96 GMC Jimmy and recently the ABS light came on and my speedometer doesn't want to work or does sporadically. Also, sometimes my Check Engine light will come on but will usually go off the same day. That is how I am feeling. PLEASE tell me this is just my speedometer sensor going out. The truck also will rev really high and I have to shift it into 2nd (it's auto trans) then when the rpm is high enough the speedometer will start to go up and I can shift it back to drive and it shifts down appropriately. Ugh. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!

1st thing, call & find a chain type auto parts store that'll give you a free computer scan. Go there, get the scan and write the Trouble Code down then let us know and we can go from there.

I agree. Getting the code will help find the problem. AutoZone and most Advance Auto stores will read them for free.

Given your symptoms, I'd venture to say that the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) or it's circuit are the likely culprit.

Re: ABS Light On & Check Engine Sometimes...

Hey all! Thanks for the info. I took the truck to Auto Zone and they said it was the speed sensor or speedometer sensor going out. The code number I think was 5020 or 5030. Does that ring any bells? I also have an appointment with a garage on Thursday of this week. Anything else I should have them look for ? Thanks again I really appreciate all your advice.
