Project RS-Really Slow and the "busting shit" guide (56k NO NO)

Alllright, I felt it was time for an update and fill you guys in on what I've been up to the past couple of weeks. Some of you may or may not know, but two summers ago on the 4th of July, well, to put it in short, my car blew up and started on fire. I was not able to work on it last year because I was 8 hours away from home at school, but I took this semester off to get things organized. Anyways, I recently started up on getting this car going again so I can finally sell the damn thing and get my Talon up and running.

I had to completely tear the engine bay apart and replace all the wiring, hoses, or anything plastic that could melt. I'll need to re-paint the hood and drivers side fender when I'm done, but I just want to get the thing running first. I know most of you probably would just junk the car, but I've put too much money into this car (over 12k with the car, it was my first actual car) and more importantly, I've put WAYYY too much time into it to just part it out and get maybe $2k back. The motor that is currently going to go in the car will be it's 5th motor in 4 years (I know, I'm good at breaking shit), but racing is a big part of my life and my family's life, and I just cant seem to keep my foot off the pedal. I've raced maybe 4-5 times, but I live in rural ND and we do it in the middle of nowhere on an open highway. I'll be updating this ALOT in the next couple weeks as I'm always working on something different each night, so expect to be entertained by my work, creativity, and most of all, my great knowledge of how to break shit.

And on to the pictures!!! (pumps fist to the sky, rambo style ) Sorry if some of them seem a little blurry, my brother fucked with some settings on my $300 digital and now it takes shitty ass pictures for some reason, damn kids.

I like to do alot of machining myself because it's good experience and I like doing it. And why pay someone to do something that I can do for free, right?

The first thing I worked on was my throttle body. I have like 4 laying around so I figured I'd give it a try because I've ported some heads and it was pretty easy, a TB can't be much worse. I took a carbide bit for a die grinder and put it in our drill press, set my height, and went to town. The 420a TB has a wicked taper in the middle, and my goal was to take that out so it was a straight through shot.

Stock TB, notice the wicked taper, that mine lacks in the picture above.

The next thing I worked on was my intake and exhaust ports on the head. I gasket matched them, but decided that wasn't enough for what I was looking for so I went a little further.

Intake ports

Exhaust ports

Here's a picture of my port matched intake mani. gasket on a stock intake manifold. Look at that increase!!

Here's a pictre of my ported exhaust mani. gasket on the stock exhaust mani. Not as much of a difference as intake, but the picture doesn't do any justice, it's a big difference!

Here's my ported intake mani. vs. the stocker.

Ported exhaust mani. vs. the stocker

This years new toy Sandblast cabinet, works wonders for custom painting engine parts.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm. Damn thing isn't even half full. I need to go on a tool shopping spree.

Now for the fun stuff. Here's some pictures of the motor that came out of the car, and a couple more of "the worst" of my busted shit.

Nice sized hole in the block. There's a smaller one on the other side, I can see daylight through my block, is that supposed to happen?

This is what the oil pan looked like when I took it off. Full of metal shavings, chunks of a rod, a partial bearing, and goopy stuff. Ewwww

I cleaned up all the chunks and pieced the rod back together. I think I did a little more damage than what JB Weld can fix. The piston is also bent, cracked in 4 places, and chunked. I was going to take pictures but my camera died so I'll get those next time.

This is what's left of the bearing. I think the rest of it just desintegrated into nothing.

Rod bolts, or what's left of them.

Motor #1

Motor #2

Motor #3

Motor #4

That's all I have for now, but there will be many more updates in the weeks to come. Enjoy!

And people wonder why I think its a bad idea to mod a stock NT...

Good luck garrett, is this the pretty painted car?

Re: Project RS-Really Slow and the "busting shit" guide (56k NO NO)

This is the pretty painted car. And I finally found some rattle can paint that matches almost exactly, so it'll have a pretty painted motor too.

Most of the breaks were from me being a dumbass and trying to drive it like I stole it, and some of them were because I was young, naieve, and dumb. The first 2 motors were because of lack of maintainence and skills on how to maintain my car (ex., timing belt replacement)

Motor 3 was because of a faulty oil pump.

Motor 4 was the first one that I started "modding" But all I had really done was a very minimal port/polish on the head, CAI, and stuff like that.

Yea I think it was somewhere around $650-700. I would never buy a Snap On box, they look nice but I think some Snap On stuff is wayyyy overrated, and ridiculously overpriced.

I thought that for the longest time to but I get everything half price since I'm a student Not only that but the quality is amazing. I have mostly craftsman tools but I'm starting to buy all snap on now because I can get a $400 tool for $200. Same thing goes with mac matco and craftman so if anyone needs anything....

Snap on is good shit but WAYYY over priced. I would rather buy a craftsman tool and break it 10 times than buy a damn Snap on for 4x the price.
