Wink Starting Problem

1999 Grand Prix GT 3.8 NA

When I start the car it runs rough for a few seconds like it is missing. If I rev the engine or drop it in gear and give her some gas it goes away and doesn't return. It only happens occasionally on hot starts. It never trips any codes. I did check the computer and no codes are found. Any ideas on where to begin? I don't want it to get worse and leave me sit.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Starting Problem

You may want to clean the Idle air control motor located on the side of the throttle body. Remove it and spray the pintle with throttle body cleaner. Reinstall and you should see a difference. Just make sure that you don't move the pintle in or out while you have it off. It only takes a few minutes to do but will improve your idle quality if it is dirty.

Re: Starting Problem

Thank you for the response. Can you tell me exactly what the IAC motor looks like and how I get it off? Thanks.

Re: Starting Problem

THANKS, I found it and it was pretty carboned up. Does the pintel move automatically? Is it factory set? I am worried I may have moved it while wiping it clean and I am not sure if that causes any problems.

Re: Starting Problem

The pintel moves when it receives a signal from the computer. As long as you didn't push on it you shouldn't have a problem. If it moved slightly it should readjust itself once the car is started. Don't be alarmed if the idle is strange for the first few starts, especially if you did move the pintel slightly.
