Car Troubles Help Please!!!

Ok I have an 83 Crown Vic LTD it has the 5.0 tbi engine. So my problem is I changed the intake gasket because it was bad and I put every thing back on and everything torked the bolts. Then when I try to start it the car acts like it doesn't want to then a puff of white spoke comes out of the throttle body and it stalls. I found out that the throttle body to intake gasket was bad replaced it but it still runs very rough and the smoke still comes out. So please can someone help me tis is my daily driver and it needs to be fixed.

Thanks

Cool Re: Car Troubles Help Please!!!

Sounds like a timing problem. Did you remove the spark wires (from either the distributor or the plugs themselves) when you replaced the intake gasket?

Not to insult your intelligence but did you put them back on correctly? A crossed up plug wire can cause the problem you describe (ask me how I know?).

Do you have a timing light?

If you removed the intake you had to pull the distributor. Did you mark the rotor so you got it installed in the correct position. If you put it on top dead center and installed to no. 1 spark plug you are probably 180 degrees out of time.

Re: Car Troubles Help Please!!!

Use a 12 volt test light and put it on the coil negative terminal does it blink as you are trying to start the car. If it doesn't blink the pick up is bad in the distributor. Take the ignition module to advance auto and get it checked.
They will do this free. Check for spark if you have spark spray starting fluid into the intake if it starts you have a fuel problem. After it is running their is a single wire next to the dist module you unplug to set base timing. When finished plug it back in. You could have a big intake leak spray all around the intake if it smooths out repair problem. Pinch off the hose to the vacuum booster if it smooths out replace.
You have a relay for the eec in the right panel check ground next to computer.
Feel the relay to see if it clicks. The fuel pump relay is close to a trunk hinge and is green.
A bad cap or rotor will also cause a no start.
