These cars hold up well, but 187000 miles is a awful lot, especially if it has the original engine and trans and has not been well cared for. If you are going to buy that car find out as much as possible about it!

Re: how well do bonneville hold up

My 1995 SSE has been the best car I've owned. I am at 205k now. It is just now giving me an indication for a future transmission problem. I say future because a piece of the (plastic) thrust washer was just found in the tranny pan when I was getting the filter changed. The car still drives like the day I bought it and I would have never guessed this to be becoming a problem. I have had now major problems with mine in over 200k miles. I think these are for sure one of the best model cars made. I am looking into buying a newer used one for this reason. I really wish I could get a new one.

Re: how well do bonneville hold up

Looks like the car you are looking at has just broken in. I have a 93 SE and for the 205k miles and 13 years that we have owned it, it has never failed on us. Only the usual stuff like alternator and other maintinence components but no major mechanical failiure at all and it still runs like new.

Re: how well do bonneville hold up

i've had two bonny's in the past and they're good cars. the only problems that i've had in both are the alternators (which is common) and the transmission in one once it hit about 220000 miles. my '87 that i had i traded in for a '99 after college. for $500 bucks i'd say your getting your moneys worth. check it out though. i'm not sure what recalls have been associated with the mid 90's models, but my '99 did have a recall for the fuel pressure regulator, however this recall came too late for me and the intake blew off the top of the engine and there was a small fire. luckily this wasn't too costly to fix. i would say just give it a drive. if there seems to be no tranny problems and there's no funny engine noises i'd say go for it.

Re: how well do bonneville hold up

I have had 87,89,92,95,99,02,and 04 Bonnies from new to 300,000+ on every one of them. Had to replace the tranny in the 02, but other than that nothing. I sold them and bought new because of what used to be called the 100,000 mile syndrome. Switchs, knobs, door locks and hinges, window motors, door gaskets, windshield and rear window leaks, trunk locks and hinges, heater controls, headlight reflectors rusting, electric fuel pumps.
