Re: underpowering question

"underpowering" is only when you don't have enough power to satisfy your listening needs (meaning you have to clip the amp in order to get it to the spl you want). It all depends on you and your needs, not the speaker's power rating.

When someone says that the amp is underrated, they mean that it's actually more powerful than what it's rated at. Hence the factory is "underrating the speaker." Should match up perfectly but because most companies test at 14.4 volts you might get a little less than what they rate it at. Either way, 70 watts rms at 4 speakers should sound pretty good. My Infinity Reference 4x6 plate's sound fucking amazing in my truck, and they're only getting about 25 watts from my head unit which is rated at 31 rms(Panasonic Digital 70X4). I'll be happy as hell when I match up Infinity's 6 channel amp to them with a pair of components.

Re: underpowering question

Shit you could put 35 watts from an amp and they can sound good, more power means you can tune it to prevent clipping at higher volume levels. You dont ever have to match power ratings from speakers/subs to amps, besides not every sub will come of the line exactly the same, same thing is true for amps.

Don't ever look at cars as just imports or domestics. Just because a car is made in a certain country doesn't mean that it is anything like another car from that country. An example of this is Mitsubishi reliability, just because they are Japanese doesn't mean that they are as reliable as a Honda or Toyota.

Re: underpowering question

amp quality, as far as variances in specs from unit to unit, are easier to control than speaker quality - or at least that's typically what you see.

Re: underpowering question

no

it's not uncommon for guys into sound quality to put 150-200% of the speakers rated power into them.

Exactly, I was told that my Infinity's could probably handle 75 watts continuously without being damaged. I don't feel like testing this though. I don't feel it's need either, as seeing what 30rms/70 peak rating does to them I can't wait to see what 50 rms/110 peak does to them. For being as tiny a speaker as they are they have AMAZING excursion.
