Would we still use leaded gas?

Ok you know the catalytic converter is basically destroyed by lead. Also when they started putting mass-produced cars with catalytic converters they also started phasing out leaded gas. Do you think if the catalytic converter was never invented we'd still have leaded gas?

Re: Would we still use leaded gas?

i think not because leaded gas is extremely harmful to the environment plus it ruins the finish on mufflers and bumpers because of residue from the lead. We still have leaded gas, but its race gas

Re: Would we still use leaded gas?

So did we.

I still think it's indicative of world attitudes, and we wouldn't still be using leaded gas.

Re: Would we still use leaded gas?

Folks, leaded gas started to be phased out in North America back in 1970, when low-lead and no lead gas was first introduced on a large scale. Catalytic converters first appeared in 1975. The two are related, but lead was already on the way out before converters.

This was done because lead (tetraethyl lead) in gas goes straight out the exhaust and into the atmosphere, where it is harmful to people, especially the brain development of children

Re: Would we still use leaded gas?

Lead was added as an anti-knock compound, and has been replaced by better chemistry. (It's still used in aviation gas though, due to properties at altitude)

I'd say that w/o the cats, we'd still have no lead gas. Bad mojo to spew that into the atmosphere.

Does cigarretes count as leaded gas? Or just chemical warfare?
