Catalytic Convertor replacement Help from those who did it DIY ???

1996 2dr S10 4x4 Blazer got the convertor unbolted but cannot wiggle it out. Do I need to remover the muffler and come out the back, or does it wiggle out the front between transmission cross menber and torsion mount cross member ? Help all replies appreciated.

the best way i found to get it out is get the biggest fu@#$%# hammer you can find and pound the thing out the back or you can take a sawzall and cut the pipe off and im sure that would work well

Thanks yeah thats a tight fit, I was tempted to sawzall it but fogured if I could not get the new on in then I would be screwed. So I put it back together so i could get to work and get some advise on getting it out. I will probably try again on the weekend and crtainly do not want to bogger up the new one trying to get it in.

Re: Catalytic Convertor replacement Help from those who did it DIY ???

Why are you taking it off? If you are replacing it, Just get a saws all an cut it near the inlet and then dremel the remaining piece off the down pipe.

That's what I did.

Check your other thread, there are pictures there.

truck has 205,000 on it, check engine light on for effieceny test and cat rattles like a MF'r. heatshields are good so insides are rattling and broken. I can destroy it to get it out, BUTTTTT how would I get the new one in ???? Its my only vehicle to drive so once it is out I must get the new one in, and in one piece.

do you already have the new one because i noticed the replacements are almost always smaller or put at an angle and they slide up there nicely

Looks like it should unbolt an pull right out. Do you disconnect the rubber connectors to the pipe and convertor and get all the bolts out?

Re: Catalytic Convertor replacement Help from those who did it DIY ???

Yes I had it totally disconnected, while trying to come out torwards the front the rear pipe and flange get caught up on the floor board, and front flange wedgeed against the transmission crossmember. trying to come out the back the oval main part of the convertor gets wedged between the floor board and torsion bar cross member. The truck has 200k on it and the crossmembers look like a bear to bet out.

Might want to go to the local muffler shop and ask what their trick is.
