building hidden TV ???

IN My girlfreind's car the previous owner put a 7" LCD in the center of the Dash/Console (I think were the stock radio was??) problem is she is at collage so she's worried about someone breaking into it. We want to make it hidden in the dash either a flip up or slide up or something to hide it. Anyone have info or links to build something like this??
Also, I live in the north winter time can get to -20F will this bother the LCD? don't know don't know alot of people with TV's in their cars. (most are still at the big muffler and unpainted bodykit and tape graphics stage up here!!! (not my car... ))

Re: building hidden TV ???

i'm not sure about the temperature, but as for building a slide-out lcd screen, i think it will be too hard and expensive. There are compnies that make a slide-out screen, so all you will see is the head-unit when you hide it. Sell the current screen, and buy something like this
that model also has a pop-out plate for extra security, btw. shop around, look for the best features and deals.

Re: building hidden TV ???

I don't think it hard or expensive. I did a quick drawing in my autocad of what I want. The only thing I am trying to figure out is what to use for springs or struts to hold it open / push it up after being pressed. makeing what I want is not a problem, I'm just trying to see if anyone else has done anything like it?

The first one is with the tv up the second is flipped down. like I said quick drawing (sorry).

Re: building hidden TV ???

well, you could be innovative with that idea, and i'm sure you could make one, but, imho, wouldn't be worth the effort. a single DIN unit with a foldout display should suit you better. If you still want to pursue this project, trust me, it will cost you.

Re: building hidden TV ???

I am going to build this, I'd reather bite the bullet and screw up and make it work and look good, I may have some effort and money into it but it's better than settleing for something anyone could walk in and pick off a shelf.

Re: building hidden TV ???

if you are into that kinda stuff, it will be lots of fun ....... and I agree about not having a car or feature that someone else can just go into a store and buy. If it's a small monitor, try having it come straight up out of a slot in the top of the dash.
