Engine Light on and Car won't start!
This is the second time that the engine light has come on and the car wont start. My keyless entry won't work and nethier will the radio. I try to turn on the car and it wont even turn over. The first time this happened to me I got the car towed to the dealer ship and then three days later ,when they finally got a chance to look at it, it started right up. Needless to say the electrician did not know what the problem was. I think the problem is not the passlock as I have tried the key learning thing. Please HELP!

Re: Engine Light on and Car won't start!
Are you sure it is not a Passlock problem. Is the Security light on? Passlock will disable pulse modulation to the fuel injection system and disable the starter so it will not crank. With ignition to on are you getting any dash lights and warning lights like Service Engine Soon or Service Vehicle Soon? Have you checked all applicable fuses. Make sure the battery to include cable connections are good.

Re: Engine Light on and Car won't start!
I'm pretty sure it is not the passlock. The security light is not coming on, instead it is the engine light that comes on (same as service engine soon light but the canadian version). With the key at on, I am getting the engine light and it stays on steadily. I have check all the fuse and the battery connection seems to be fine.

Re: Engine Light on and Car won't start!
Getting the SES light at "Ignition to On" in a US Alero is a normal indication. Of course, it will extinguish once the engine is started. Since it sounds like a starter related issue you may want to check the ignition circuits voltage (12 volts) going to the starter solenoid "S" terminal with ignition to start. Also, 12 volts will always be present from the battery to the starter motor so make sure the cables are good. Back tracking there is a crank relay at the engine compartment fuse box and before that the neutral/park switch which is part of the transmission range switch. Before that component is the ignition switch.
You can use a multimeter or 12 volt test lamp and it would help to have the GM wiring diagram of that circuit.

Re: Engine Light on and Car won't start!
I have 2000 Olds alero ad my car did the same thing. At first the passcode didn't work for me either. Then I was told to have a NEW key made if I was using the original key. I went and had a 1.00 key made and my car started up! I have never had the problem again.
