1993 Grand Am...battery light
I just bought a 93 grand am and after i had the oil changed the battery light came on...eventually the battery ran down and now it won't hold a charge.
The car did not come with an owners manual. Any ideas? |

Re: 1993 Grand Am...battery light
Welcome to AF !
Sounds like your alternator has quit charging your battery. Most auto parts stores can test the alternator for you if you bring it in. And you may need to also replace the battery if it wont hold a charge after you replace the alternator . Hope that helps !

Re: 1993 Grand Am...battery light
I agree with Xeroinfinity. The alternator will not actually charge a battery. It will maintain the battery but the chemical reaction inside the battery is what maintains the charge. Have the alternator checked and it is alright then replace the battery. I suspect that the battery has died a premature death but since you got a battery light the alternator may have gone bad too. One thing you need to check is the alternator connection and the battery cables. All can be sources of problems. Finally, if you need a new alternator make sure to disconnect the battery cables before reinstalling the new one or it will damage the new one.
