93 sunbird running rough after gasket change

We had a bad oil leak, and changed the oil pump and the oil pan gaskets. After putting everything back together, it is running very rough. We tried several times to adjust the timing by taking the belt off, and moving the teeth over one notch at a time. We got it to where it sounded right, then after getting the rest of the parts back on, it was worse than ever, plus the oil was leaking even worse.
Is there an easy way to set the timing without using a timing light?
Thanks so anyone who can give advise. Julie

Those engines require special tools when replacing the timing belt. It's pretty common to have them jump time. Since it's an interference motor, if it gets off too far, you may bend a valve or two (or all) due to piston/valve contact.
