Should I buy it?

ok guys, i am in the market for a used maxima. Place near me has a 99 GLE for sale at 4750. New tires, good sound system, new brakes, but it has 172000 miles on it. it is VERY CLEAN. They said it was mostly highway miles, which i belive considering how much you would have to drive the car each year to accumulate those miles. CarFax checks out on it, no accidents reported, passed all tests and it was registered in Tennessee the whole time. seems like a good buy, dealer is at 4750 for it right now. Here is a link to the car http://www.tripleeauto.com/ go into their inventory, its on the second page in the middle. I need to know the track record of these cars once they have that many miles on them. Will i be replacing a transmission soon? or will i be able to get about 50,000 miles out of it. Any help is very appreciated.

Re: Should I buy it?

- no free miles exist
- all depends on maintenance history
- get an independent evaluation, even pay for it
- I'd try to find low mile max, yes there are such

Re: Should I buy it?

It looks like a very clean car. I only kept mine to around 120,000 miles before trading in, but there are a few people here and on another forum with 200,000+ miles on theirs. The mileage shouldn't be a problem. 172K miles being all highway? (he's a dealer; he's going to tell you that) Seeing as the 2007's are out, that makes it an eight yr old car and 21.5K a year isn't hard. I put about 19K and my wife puts on 22K a year and we may put about five thousand highway miles each on our cars.
As far as the bose system goes, I have heard a lot of complaints about it breaking. If that one has lasted that long maybe you won't have a problem.
I hope I didn't scare you; it is a great car though. Many of us are on our second and third Maxima. Like Nak.... said, you may want to get it looked at by a mechanic. Ask the salesman if you can take it to Action Nissan. They may not charge you to do a quick look over the vehicle if you tell them what's going on. My dealership didn't.

i had a 4th gen with 170,000, it was still running fine when i traded in for my 02, which i have almost 100,000 on. my buddy had a 3rd gen with 300,000 miles. these things will last forever if they're taken care of
