transmission

i am looking at a 1997 328is. it is an automatic. i finally was able to take it for a test drive. driving out of the lot the car accelerated and broke good. a few hundred feet down the street we met a light. when the light turned green i slowly pressed on the accelerator and the car seemed to have gotten "stuck" then suddenly the car jerked hard and moved. this happened twice in a row. after that even flooring the car from a dead stop would not repeat the "jerk". i figure it was the transmission oil that was low. is my guess correct? or does this mean that the problem is more than just low fluids, but the transmission itself? any thoughts welcome.

I'm not sure if this is the problem or not, but your best bet would be to try to test drive another car of similar specs, like 1997, auto, and similar mile-age.

This will cut a lot of "possibilities".
